10 Reasons to Volunteer this Summer

  1. Make a difference.
Volunteering is about giving back. With a team of like-minded people by your side, you’ll get the chance to be a part of something bigger than yourself: to immerse yourself in an exotic culture, instigate change at a grassroots level and along the way, to gain new perspective.

  2. Change a life.
We believe the most beneficial thing we can do is to give people opportunities, not handouts. With us, you will lay the foundations of durable change and improvement in the lives of the communities you work with.

  3. Travel responsibly:
Our programs are run entirely through the host communities: from sourcing construction materials to buying the ingredients for our meals, everything is as local and sustainable as it gets. You will learn about the history, culture and language of your chosen destination, as well as gain an understanding of how each of our volunteer projects has been tailored to meet a specific request from our hosts.

As a general rule for travelling responsibly, you can ask yourself:

    • How will it be beneficial to the local community?
    • Is the local culture being respected?
    • What problem will the finished project solve?
  4. Give back to the causes most meaningful to you.
Pick your destination based on what inspires you most. Whether it’s animal conservation, primary education, or construction work, you will create positive change in the world through the work you do with us. By volunteering with VESA, you will contribute to projects that have been on-going for up to 8 years!

  5. Gain a new perspective.

As the saying goes, “life begins at the end of your comfort-zone”. We come from extremely privileged countries in terms of both opportunities and amenities, and often do not realise the hardships others endure. Come away with us and dive head first into another culture; you’ll be amazed by how much you take away from the experience, and how it allows you to see the world in a different way.

  6. Make a real connection.
Our volunteer programs are offered worldwide, which means you’ll have the chance to work alongside people from all over the globe and make life-long friendships!

  7. Real-world experience.
Releasing baby turtles, teaching english in underprivileged primary schools, laying foundations and building houses, preparing lunch for up to 100 children, cleaning crocodile enclosures, refurbishing classrooms, making enrichment toys for elephants… talk about real-world experience! You will bring home skills you never even knew existed!

  8. Learn new skills.

Volunteering abroad is eye-opening, and the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself: you’ll learn to problem-solve, work with a team, be resourceful and adapt to life in an unfamiliar environment. These are skills that will benefit you for the rest of your life, no matter what field of work you chose.

  9. Boost your career.
As a general rule, recruiters look out for people with community involvement such as international volunteering on their resume. It helps to create a positive impression, makes you more innovative, creative and gives you a range of useful skills.

  10. It's fun!
Volunteer work can be demanding, but it’s also a whole lot of fun! You will meet a ton of new people, discover new places and make memories for a lifetime. As a reward for your efforts, we’ve incorporated some down time into all our programs! Picture yourself trekking through the Amazonian jungle, island hopping through tropical paradise in Fiji, exploring ancient temples and caves in Southeast Asia, or discovering Africa’s incredible wildlife on safari… what are you waiting for?!
